چکیده

Hypotheses: Adaptation to different environments can drive the evolution of mating isolation and thereby contribute to ecological speciation. Adaptive divergence in nest characteristics, which could be one avenue to mating isolation, has received little attention. For it to be important, populations adapted to different environments should show genetic differences in nest characteristics. Organisms: Second-generation, laboratory-reared stocks of threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus L.) from the Misty system, British Columbia, Canada. Experimental fish included pure lake fish, pure inlet fish, and lake–inlet hybrids. Methods: Males of different types (lake, inlet, and hybrid) were paired in aquaria, allowed to build nests, and then exposed to females of all three types (individually and on separate days). The resulting nests were photographed, collected, weighed, and dissected. Results: Lake nests were bulkier than inlet nests, and less often placed on gravel substrate than sand. Hybrid males tended to build intermediate nests but showed very high variation. Some hybrids built lake-like nests and others built inlet-like nests. Conclusions: Nest characteristics show genetic differences between lake and inlet stickleback, and might therefore contribute to any mating isolation.

Testing for mating isolation between ecotypes: laboratory experiments with lake, stream and hybrid stickleback.

Mating isolation is a frequent contributor to ecological speciation - but how consistently does it evolve as a result of divergent selection? We tested for genetically based mating isolation between lake and stream threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus L.) from the Misty watershed, Vancouver Island, British Columbia. We combined several design elements that are uncommon in the studies ...

Genetic and plastic contributions to trait divergence between parapatric habitats: female life-history traits in threespine stickleback within the Misty Lake system

Question: How do genetic and plastic effects on maternal investment influence divergence between parapatric populations that do or do not show high gene flow? How might these patterns influence adaptation and progress towards ecological speciation? Organisms: Wild-caught and laboratory-reared lake, inlet stream, and outlet stream threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) from the Misty La...

Genetic divergence in morphology-performance mapping between Misty Lake and inlet stickleback.

Different environments should select for different aspects of organismal performance, which should lead to correlated divergence in morphological traits that influence performance. The result should be genetic divergence in aspects of performance, morphology and associations ('maps') between morphology and performance. Testing this hypothesis requires quantifying performance and morphology in m...

Genetic and environmental contributions to the morphology of lake and stream stickleback: implications for gene flow and reproductive isolation

Question: Do the morphological differences between wild lake and stream stickleback have a genetic basis? Organisms: Wild-caught and laboratory-reared threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) from Misty Lake, and from its inlet and outlet streams. Methods: A common-garden experiment was used to examine the genetic and environmental components of morphological variation. Morphology was qu...

Adaptive divergence and the balance between selection and gene flow: lake and stream stickleback in the Misty system.

We investigated the interplay between natural selection and gene flow in the adaptive divergence of threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) that reside parapatrically in lakes and streams. Within the Misty Lake system (Vancouver Island, British Columbia), stickleback from the inlet stream (flowing into the lake) have fewer gill rakers and deeper bodies than stickleback from the lake--di...
